Description

  • GLIMET® / GLIMET DS® combines Glipizide, a second-generation sulfonylurea, and Metformin, for effective management of Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Glipizide lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from functioning pancreatic β-cells.
  • Metformin improves glucose control by reducing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal glucose absorption, and enhancing insulin sensitivity.
  • Together, they offer complementary mechanisms, targeting both insulin secretion and insulin resistance, resulting in better glycaemic control and potentially helping prevent microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes.

Indications

  • Oral therapy of moderate to severe Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Type 2 diabetics not controlled by two doses of either hypoglycaemic agent where dual therapy is considered necessary for optimum control.
  • In Type 2 diabetics already on dual therapy, where use of GLIMET® / GLIMET DS® can halve the number of tablets consumed daily.

Dosage and administration

  •  Dosage should be individualized on the basis of both effectiveness and tolerance. The combination should be given once daily with meals and should be started at a low dose.
  • Depending upon the severity of hyperglycaemia, oral therapy of Type 2 Diabetes may be initiated with GLIMET® / GLIMET DS® at a dose of one tablet twice daily half an hour before meals. Blood sugar levels should be evaluated at weekly intervals. Dose titration should be done at intervals of 10 to 14 days or as decided by the physician.
  • It is also possible to supplement GLIMET® / GLIMET DS® dose with exogenous insulin in cases with advanced diabetes.
  • GLIMET® / GLIMET DS® need about 10 days to exert its optimum action. Hence, during this initial titration phase, it is possible to add short-acting or short plus long-acting insulins to tide over the initial uncontrolled phase.

Maximum Recommended Dose

  • The maximum recommended dose for glipizide is 20 mg daily. The maximum recommended daily dose for metformin is 2500 mg in adults.
