Description

• ATHEART-10^® contains Atorvastatin, a lipid-lowering agent, belonging to the class of statins. Atorvastatin is a selective, competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme that converts 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl- coenzyme A to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol. Atorvastatin lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Atorvastatin also increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell-surface to enhance uptake and catabolism of LDL. Atorvastatin produces greater reductions in LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol as compared to any other statin. In addition to cholesterol reduction, Atorvastatin also exhibits triglyceride lowering properties and also significantly lowers apolipoprotein B levels.

Indications

• Hyperlipoproteinemia
• Heterozygous (familial and non-familial) hypercholesterolaemia
• Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia
• Hypertriglyceridemia
• Combined hyperlipidaemia
• Primary remnant hyperlipoproteinemia
• Hyperlipidaemia associated with Hypertension & Type 2 Diabetes
• To reduce Total Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol in patients as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis)

Dosage

• The recommended starting dose is ATHEART-10° once daily. ATHEART-10° can be administered as a single dose at any time of the day, with or without food. The starting dose and maintenance doses of ATHEART-10 should be individualized according to patient characteristics such as goal of therapy and response. After initiation and/or up-titration of ATHEART-10^® lipid levels should be analysed within 2 to 4 weeks and the dosage adjusted accordingly. The dosage range of atorvastatin is 10 to 80 mg once daily.
